Panera Bread Grilled Cheese Recipe

Panera Bread Grilled Cheese Recipe - Simple Easy Meals

When it comes to comfort food, few dishes evoke those warm, nostalgic feelings quite like a grilled cheese sandwich.
Pair it with a bowl of tomato soup, and you have a classic duo that warms the soul. The creamy, tangy flavors of the soup complement the buttery richness of the grilled cheese perfectly.
Another great option is a fresh garden salad. The crunch and freshness of the greens counterbalance the richness of the sandwich. Feel free to toss in a few veggies like cucumbers and cherry tomatoes, and a light vinaigrette will do wonders.
You could even consider some crispy potato chips or a side of pickles for that extra bit of crunch and tang.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 oz. sharp Cheddar cheese, thinly sliced
  • 3 oz. ripe Roma tomatoes, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices Applewood smoked bacon, crispy and crumbled
  • 1 1/2 oz. Gruyère cheese, shredded or sliced
  • 1 1/2 oz. Fontina cheese, thinly sliced
  • A pinch of crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 tbsp fresh basil, finely chopped
  • Softened butter, for spreading
  • 4 slices Panera® Artisan White Bread

Method

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients
  1. Start by gathering all your ingredients. Slice your cheeses, crumble the bacon, and dice your tomatoes. Having everything ready will make the cooking process smooth.
Step 2: Assemble the Sandwich
  1. Take two slices of the artisan bread. Layer on the sharp Cheddar, followed by the Gruyère, then the Fontina. Next, add the sliced tomatoes and crumbled bacon. Sprinkle on the basil and red pepper flakes for added flavor. Top with the other two slices of bread.
Step 3: Butter the Bread
  1. Spread a generous amount of softened butter on the outer sides of each slice of bread. This butter will help achieve that golden-brown, crispy texture we all crave.
Step 4: Heat the Pan
  1. Preheat a skillet or frying pan over medium heat. You’ll want it hot enough that the butter melts, but not so hot that it burns. A test drop of bread should sizzle, not splatter or smoke.
Step 5: Grill to Perfection
  1. Place the assembly in the hot skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side until golden brown, then flip carefully using a spatula. Press down slightly with the back of the spatula to ensure even cooking. Cook for another 3-4 minutes, making sure the cheese is melting and the bread is crisp.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy
  1. Once both sides are toasty and the cheese has melted beautifully, remove the sandwiches from the pan. Allow them to cool for about a minute before slicing in half and serving. This will prevent the gooey cheese from spilling everywhere.

Notes

  • Choose quality bread: Hearty artisan bread holds up against the fillings and crisps nicely.
  • Use a mix of cheeses: Combining flavors creates a more complex profile than sticking to one.
  • Avoid overcrowding: Cook one or two sandwiches at a time to ensure they grill evenly.
  • Control your heat: Medium heat ensures the cheese melts without burning the bread.
  • Let it cool: After grilling, allow the sandwich to sit briefly, so the cheese sets a bit.
