Ingredients

  • 1 cup loosely packed tender celery leaves: Fresh leaves bring out the best flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil: This adds moisture to the salt.
  • 1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt: A balanced base flavor that pairs perfectly.
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice: To enhance the overall freshness.

Method

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients
  1. First things first, gather all your ingredients. Ensure that everything is fresh, especially the celery leaves. Fresh components lead to bright flavors!
Step 2: Preparing the Celery Leaves
  1. Rinse your celery leaves thoroughly under cool water. Pat them dry gently with a kitchen towel or paper towel. Removing excess moisture will help in the drying process.
Step 3: Dry the Celery Leaves
  1. Now, you can dry the celery leaves. You can either lay them flat on a baking sheet and put them in a cool oven (around 180°F) or use a food dehydrator if you have one. The goal is to remove any moisture completely without cooking the leaves, which typically takes around two hours.
Step 4: Blend the Ingredients
  1. Once the celery leaves are dried, place them in a food processor, along with the sea salt and olive oil. Blend them until they’re ground to a fine consistency.
Step 5: Add Lemon Juice
  1. Lastly, drizzle the freshly squeezed lemon juice into the processor. Give it another quick pulse just to combine everything.
Step 6: Store in an Airtight Container
  1. Transfer your homemade celery salt to an airtight container. Store it in a cool, dark place, and it can last for several months.

Notes

  • Experiment with Other Herbs: Don’t hesitate to mix in herbs like parsley or dill for a unique flavor profile.
  • Keep the Ratio Simple: Stick to a 2:1 ratio of celery leaves to salt for a balanced flavor.
  • Store Properly: An airtight container in a cool, dark place will prolong its life. Exposure to light can diminish flavor.
  • Use a Spice Grinder: If you lack a food processor, a spice grinder works wonders for grinding your celery leaves and salt.
  • Label Your Containers: For easy use, label your containers with the date so you know when you made it.
