I got this idea from the Golden Grahams and Rice Crispy squares you can buy commercially.  I figured that I would try to make them and save some money.  These are not only great for school, work but also for those special family gatherings  This is simple and easy to do with photo’s to help you a long the way.  Happy cooking!

(Not suitable for diabetics.)

What you need:


Bowl (1 large for cereal mixture and smaller bowls if you prefer to prepare your ingredients ahead like I did)

Mixing spoon (preferably one that is non stick but if you don’t have that, just grease up a large spoon to mix and set)


1 medium sized kitchen pot

Cup of very hot water

Cutting board

Cake pan


5 1/2 cups of your favorite cereal

5 1/2 cups marshmallows

1 cup marshmallows

1 cup flavored chip to mix in cereal(chocolate, butterscotch, peanut butter)

3 cups of flavored chip for coating (chocolate, butterscotch, peanut butter)

1/2 cup butter or margarine

1 cup butter to add to melting chocolate for coating

1/2 teaspoon vanilla


1 cup of your favorite nuts

1 cup of favorite dried fruit

How to do it:

  1. Gather all ingredients and equipment needed.
  2. Pour cereal into large bowl and crush with hands as needed into smaller pieces (Except rice crispies or other small cereal.)


  1. Using knife, chop up the 1 cup of marshmallows (save the 5 1/2 cups for later) and nuts/dried fruit if added.


  1. Turn on stove to medium heat.  Add the following to the pot :  1/2 cup margarine/butter and 5 1/2 cups marshmallows.   Melt while stirring constantly until a nice smooth consistency.  Add 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.  When everything is melted together, remove from heat and immediately pour into cereal mixture.  Mix with your hand if it’s not too hot but you may want to start off using a spoon first.


  1. Grease the cake pan on all sides and or add wax paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Add mixture to the pan, squishing down into the entire pan.  Should be about a 1/2″ to 1″ thick depending on which size of pan you use.


  1. Add 1 cup of butter to pot and melt on medium heat.  Add the 3 cups flavored chips and melt together.  When completely melted, pour over the cereal mixture in pan and spread to even amount.


  1. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until chocolate is hard.


  1. Remove from refrigerator and cut into your choice of bar.
  2. Place bars in a container to keep fresh.


  1. Eat and enjoy!
