Canna Butter – Easy

This is one of the better known Cannabis recipes and is the base in many recipes.  There is a right way and a wrong way to do this believe it or not.  If you mess it up, you get a very nasty and unexpected product which you may not find appealing.

***Important: Watch your heat level.  If it’s too hot, it will destroy the medication but not enough heat will prevent the medication from being properly infused.

What you need:

Saucepan or slow cooker

Stove if using a saucepan

Glass dish or bowl to drain hot butter mix with lid or plastic wrap

Cheesecloth

String

Wooden spoon for stirring

Grinder or coffee grinder

Ingredients:

1/4 oz of Cannabis flowers (buds)

1/2 cup or 1 stick of butter

How to do it:

  • Add butter to saucepan and melt the butter on a medium heat.  Do not turn it up too high or you will kill the medication.
  • Add finely ground cannabis to the melted butter and change setting to low.  Allow to cook on low for 45 minutes making sure to stir the mixture frequently.
  • At this point you may notice bubbles forming on top of the mixture and it’s now time to strain the butter mixture to separate butter from Cannabis.
  • If you are using a fine strainer:  Put the strainer over your glass bowl or plate.  Pour mixture through strainer.  Be careful because the butter will be hot!
  • If you are using a cheesecloth:  Take your cheesecloth and place over a bowl.  Use an elastic band or hair tie to fasten it to the glass container.  Pour hot butter mixture over the cheesecloth.  Allow butter a little time to cool down before wringing out the cheesecloth to get the last drop of butter.
  • Throw away the Cannabis as it will no longer be usable.
  • Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature before closing with lid.  If using a bowl with no lid, cover the cooling mixture with a plastic food wrap.  Refrigerate.
  • Once butter is cooled it will have separated.  Use a spoon to make a small hole through top layer of butter to contents on bottom.  The content on the bottom will be drained through the hole and thrown away.  This step is often missed and people wonder why they end up with a messy looking product which is not as usable.
  • Once the fluid from the bottom has been drained, you have your Canna butter.  Take your Canna butter and mix a little then put in a glass jar to store or freeze in freezer safe container and use in almost all your cooking.
  • Need fast pain relief?  Melt a little and add to popcorn while enjoying your favorite movie!  You can also melt and add to your meals like pasta for instance.

For those looking for a stronger medicinal dose, use up to 2 oz of Cannabis to one pound of butter.

Cannabis Olive Oil

Cannabis Infused Olive Oil

If you are using Marijuana for medical purposes or live in an area where it is legal for social consumption, there are some recipes which may help to extend the medication.  Unlike butter, Olive oil is clear and remains in a liquid form for baking and cooking.  This is a simple recipe to make your own Cannabis Infused Olive Oil.

What you need:

Medium saucepan or small slow cooker

Grinder

Spoon to stir

Cheesecloth to strain

Container to store

Ingredients:

3.5 cups virgin olive oil

1 oz marijuana, finely ground

How to do it:

  • Pour the oil into a saucepan or slow cooker.  If you use a saucepan and stove, turn up your heat to a medium level.  If using a slow cooker, turn it to low or medium setting.  Be careful not to let the oil get to a boiling point.  Once the oil has heated, add the finely ground marijuana and stir.  To get the finest grind use a coffee grinder.
  • The oil should simmer, not boil and should be stirred constantly.  If you see bubbles start to form, your heat is too high so turn it down and remove the oil from the burner (if using stove) until it cools slightly.  When you boil the mixture you are releasing too much of the THC and you will not get the effect you are hoping for from your oil.  Allow this mixture to cook for approximately 1 hour or 2 if you are up to waiting.
  • Grab your cheesecloth, drape it over a bowl and fasten to keep secure.  Pour the oil mixture over the cheesecloth until the mixture is all out of the pan and in your bowl.  Make sure to squeeze the cheesecloth into the bowl to get every drop.
  • Cool mixture a little then add to a container which you can seal and keep fresh to use in your cooking.
  • You now have your Cannabis Infused Oil.  Now get cooking!
